Yohimbine pharmacology
Sometime in the future, theoretical advancements in genetic engineering may make it possible to create humans predisposed to live significantly longer lives. Furthermore, futurists hypothesize that it might be possible not only to engineer new lives but also to re-engineer existing human biology. This could involve using viral vectors to deliver new genetic information into the nucleus of cells to eliminate diseases and potentially slow the aging process.
In such a speculative scenario, biological procreation might be replaced by biological re-creation.
Alas, we are not quite there yet. I myself am not optimistic that I will benefit from such theoretical advances in genetic science to live for hundreds of years. Therefore, I am more concerned with optimizing what I can have in a relatively normal human lifespan, followed by a comfortable death.
I shall attempt to get the most out of my life and extend my vitality as much as possible, in a condition as good as possible. For me, this means maintaining a physical condition that allows me to enjoy a fulfilling sex life right up to my later years.
For optimal sexual function in later life, plain healthy living alone often doesn’t do the job. Without sexual enhancement medications or supplements, many aging men are not in a physical condition that allows for a fulfilling sex life. Because radical life-extension via genetic engineering is currently unavailable, they largely have to rely on pharmacological and botanical means.
Options include:
1. Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors such as sildenafil citrate and tadalafil.
2. Dopaminergic agents such as Parlodel (bromocriptine), though these are largely obsolete for sexual dysfunction today due to the availability of better alternatives and their side-effect profiles.
3. Tongkat ali and Tongkat Ali extract.
4. Yohimbe (the bark) and yohimbine (the isolated pharmaceutical).
I used yohimbine for years, and it definitely worked for supporting erections. However, I stopped taking it long ago because of the severe side effects it had on me, such as heart palpitations and insomnia lasting up to 30 hours. For individuals who do not experience these severe cardiovascular and stimulant side effects, yohimbe and yohimbine can be effective alternatives to phosphodiesterase inhibitors, though PDE5 inhibitors remain the clinical gold standard due to their targeted mechanism and vastly superior safety profiles.
